what are the causes of renal trauma
A
- Blunt trauma ( most common )
- penetrating
- sports injury
- traffic accidents
- falls

what are the assesments?
A
- is there injury to the back, abdomen, or flank

- urinalusis
- IVP with cystography
- ultrasound
- CT scan
- MRI
- renal arteriography

which kidney do you check?
A
both uninjured and injured kidneys should be evaluated to provide information for further management

the severity of trauma depends on?
A
extent of the injury

what are the treatments?
A
treatments range from bed rest, fluids, and analgesics to surgical exploration and repair or nephrectomy.

what are the nursing interventions?
A
- ensure patient have increased fluid intake
- provide comfort measures
- monitor for shock
- monitor intake and output
- observe for hematuria
- determining the presence of myoglobinuria
- assess the cardiovascular status
- monitor for potential nephrotoxic antibiotics

what is myoglobinuria
A
- urine is reddish (strong tea coloured) which means myoglobin is in the urine

where does myoglobinuria come from
A
- results from rhabdomyolosis and can lead to AKI and shutting down
- Kidney cannot filter waste from rhabdomyolosis and results in kidney injury

what is rhabdomyolosis caused by?
A
- caused by crash injuries
- prolonged immobilization
- major seizures
