Renal System I&II Flashcards
What the functions of the kidney?
Regulation, Excretion, Hormone production, Bp maintenance
What is regulated in the kidney?
Body fluid volume, osmolarity, electrolyte balance, acid/base balance
What is excreted from the kidney?
Elimination of waste products of metabolism eg water, urea, NH3, toxins, drugs
Name examples of vital hormones produced by the kidney
Erythropoietin, renin
Where is urine formed?
In the kidneys
Describe the accessory systems
Ureters - Convey urine from kidneys to bladder
Bladder - Storage
Urethra - Conveys urine from bladder to the out
What is the nephron?
Functional unit of the kidney
Describe the nephron
Million per kidney, Each nephron has 2 components
What are the 2 components of the nephron?
Tubular and vascular
What is the juxtaglomerulus apparatus?
Where distal tubule is in contact with afferent and efferent arterioles
What are the 2 components of the JA?
Macula densa, Granular cells
What is the function of the JA?
Regulate blood volume and pressure
What is the importance of the juxtamedullary nephron?
For maintaining osmotic gradient in renal medulla
Define glomerular filtration
Bulk flow of protein-free plasma from glomerular caps into Bowman’s cap
Describe glomerular filtrate
20% of blood in glomerulus is filtered, 80% of blood leaves via efferent arterioles
