renal physiology Flashcards
what are the key function of the kidney?
homeostasis: • filtration and reabsorption of water and electrolytes • BP control • K+ Vitamin D activation EPO
Which substances undergo net excretion in the kidney into the urine?
sodium
phosphate
potassium
uraemic toxins
what is GFR?
the volume of blood filtered by the kidneys per min
How much of the cardiac output do both kidneys take?
20%
How do we stage the severity of CKD?
by eGFR value
what are some complications of CKD?
anaemia
bone disease
symptoms from build up of uraemic toxins
Why do we use eGFR and not GFR itself?
clinically, it is not practical to measure GFR directly, as you need a substance that is freely filtered and that your body doesn’t reabsorb or secrete afterwards and the body does not contain a substance like this
so GFR is estimated using serum creatinine
