renal stones, tumours, prostatic hypertrophy
what does it mean if you detect bacteria in urine?

what is the common bacteria for UTI
E. coli

what are the predisposing factors for a UTI?
poor bladder emptying and low urinary flow rates
what are the symptoms of a UTI?
dysuria, urinary frequency, cloudy urine, offensive smelling urine, supra-pubic pain
what can infected urine cause?
cystitis, renal infection, prostate infection
what is the condition when urethritis occurs in isolation?
gonococcal
what is the treatment for a UTI?
diagnosis, increase fluid intake, frequent micturation, occasionally antibiotics required (amoxycillin)
how can prostate disease make passing urine difficult?
the urethra passes through the prostate gland, any enlargement compresses urethra and makes passing urine more difficult
what is prostatitis
inflammation of the prostate
what is a benign prostatic hypertrophy?
hyperplasia of the prostate
what is prostatic cancer?
adenocarcinoma
what symptoms are there with benign prostatic hypertrophy?
slow stream, hesitancy, frequency, urgency, nocturia, incomplete voiding
what treatment options are there for benign prostatic hypertrophy?
drugs and surgery
what drugs are used for benign prostatic hypertrophy?
alpha blocking drugs, anticholinergic, diuretics
what surgeries are there for benign prostatic hypertrophy?
TURP - transurethral prostatectomy, robot assisted prostatectomy, open prostatectomy
describe a transurethral prostatectomy
access prostate through urethra, catheter followed by a trocar removing parts of the prostate from inside the urethra
what are the advantages of robot surgery?
incontinence and impotence less likely
when does prostatic malignancy occur?
after age 45
what screening tests are done for prostate cancer?
PSA (prostate specific antigen) blood test, mpMRI
what are the treatments for prostatic malignancy?
surgery, radiotherapy, hormone treatment
