Renal Lab Flashcards
urine volume
lower for salt-water group b/c ADH acts to concentrate the urine to return osmotic pressure of the blood back to its normal level resulting in a decrease in urine ouyput (volume) for the salt water group
specific gravity
higher for the salt water group because more solutes such as sodium and chloride will be present in the urine to return the osmotic pressure of the blood back to normal level resulting in an increase in the specific gravity of the urine for the salt water group
chloride concentration
higher for the salt water group b/c chloride (and sodium) were being excreted in the urine to return the osmotic pressure of the blood back to normal level resulting in the chloride and sodium concentration of the urine for the salt water group
hormones used
ADH and Aldosterone
ADH
regulates water retention
if dehydrated, or has ingested high levels of salt, ADH will act to concentrate the urine
ADH decreases the osmotic pressure of the blood back to normal
Aldosterone
responsible for salt retention
if decrease in blood sodium, aldosterone helps to increase osmotic pressure of blood back to normal level.
it causes kidneys to retain salt and indirectly to retain water as well!
Experiment
divided into two groups
one drinks only 500 ml of water
other drinks water with 4.5grams of salt
no solutions or food intake for the next 2 hours
Urine is voided every 30 minutes for 2 hours
equipment
urinometer - float a urinometer in cylinder with urine sample. make sure the urinometer is not touching bottom of cylinder. this reads the specific gravity from stem of urinometer, from 1.010 to 1.025 depending on the amount of solute in urine
