what are the three types of acute renal failure?
A
prerenal, postrenal, intrarenal

what causes prerenal failure?
A
a decrease in circulatory blood volume, or a condition the causes an obstruction in renal perfusion (ie thrombosis or stenosis)

what causes postrenal failure?
A
an obstruction in the urinary collection system such as a stone

what causes intrarenal failure?
A
damage to the kidenys from things such as infection, ischemia (eg map <60 for 40+min, nephrotoxic agents, trauma, rhabdo)

how is prerenal failure treated?
A
restore intravascular volume, pharmocological intervention such as dopamine and diuretics

how is postrenal failure treated?
A
remove the obstruction
