Q

How does insulin metabolism relate to renal function

A

Decreased insulin metabolism occurs in renal failure
alterations in insulin requirements as renal failure progresses
*hypoglycemia can be the result in patients taking insulin or oral hypoglycemic agents because you’re not peeing out as much of the drug (so it stays in your body longer and acts on the glucose)

Q

What is the (pseudo) endocrine function of the kidneys

A

Renin secretion-juxtaglomerular apparatus is a powerful regulator of BP plays a role in many types of HTN
EPO secretion
Metabolism of prostaglandins and kinins

Q

Prostaglandin effect

A

They have a vasodilating effect on the renal vasculatre

NSAIDs can inhibit this effect and cause renal failure

Q

Stages of renal disease

A
Based on CrCl
Stage 1: nothing wrong; GFR >90ml/min
Stage 2: mild; GFR >60ml/min
Stage 3 (where most people are): GFR >30
Stage 4: Severe; GFR 15-29ml/min
Stage 5: need dialysis; <15 ml/min
