Renal acid and Base Control Flashcards

1

Acidemia

A

ICF takes in H+
=low ECF pH
pH<7.35

High H+ concentration buffered by raising ECF K+ concentration

Q

Phosphate Buffering of Secreted H+

A

The buffering of secreted H+ regenerates the plasma HCO3- that had be “consumed” elsewhere when the NaH2PO4 lost a H+ in a less acidic body compartment. It now carries that H+ into the urine

Q

Urine Acidification

A

“New” bicarb is generated during this process

Secreted H+ is buffered by NH3–>NH4+, phosphate, etc, for excretion while bicarb is reabsorbed
