- withhold the drug
- amend dose
- continue
3
Q
If your patient has reduced renal function you need to think about the following
A
- is the patient in AKI or CKD?
- is the patient at risk of AKI?
- which medications should be suspended?
- which medications should we use with caution?
- are there any alternative therapeutic options?
- what dose should a medication be reduced to?
- what additional monitoring do we need to do?
- what are the pharmacokinetics of the drug?
- what are the pharmacodynamics of the drug?
4
Q
pharmaokenetics : ADME
A
Absorption
Distribution
Metabolism
Excretion
5
Q
how can absorption of a drug be effected? (renal)
A
Patients with renal failure typically have oedema as their kidneys are less efficient at removing water and salt
Oedema can affect the wall of the bowel
This may lead to reduced absorption of drugs
