Renal Flashcards
Acute Kidney Injury
A sudden loss of kidney function due to a non-renal condition
Chronic Kidney Disease
A progressive loss of kidney function over months or years
End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
Total and permanent kidney failure
Nephron
Functional unit of the kidney
Glomerulus
a large filtering unit that is located within Bowman’s capsule; the afferent arteriole delivers blood into the glomerulus
Proximal Tubule
closest to the Bowman’s capsule (the entry of the nephron) where much of the Na, Ca, Cl, and water is reabsorbed back into the bloodstream
Loop of Henle
Long U-shaped portion of the tubule that conducts urine within each nephron with the function of recovery of water and sodium chloride from urine.
Distal Convoluted Tubule
Farthest away from the entry of the nephron that regulates K, Ca, Na, and pH
Collecting duct
Network of tubules and ducts that connect the nephrons in each kidney to a ureter
