What role did the Catholic Church play in the daily lives of Europeans?
Total control over the people (serfs worked on church land, everyone paid taxes to the Pope)
What is feudalism?
Hierarchy of power in society (peasants, knights/nobles, lords/ladies, kings/queens)
Components of Renaissance art/sculptures?
More realistic, focuses on human/general society, more colors, more depth, more dimension
What advices does Machiavelli’s The Prince give to heads of state?
It is better to be feared than be loved, you can gain better control of your people in time of need if you’re feared.
What effect does the printing press have on literacy and ideas?
Literacy rates increase, religious corruption ideas spread
What were indulgences?
A sale of pardon for sins to “buy” your way into heaven.
How were indulgences an abuse from the Catholic church?
The church was taking advantage of the poor people’s money and literacy abilities (they won’t be able to read the Bible and know it’s not true)
What were other examples of Church corruption?
Misuse of funds, putting it towards individual wealth rather than the poor, nepotism (giving people jobs that don’t deserve them)
Who was Martin Luther?
A Catholic monk and theologist
In Martin Luther’s 95 Theses, what changes did he want to see from the Catholic Church?
The end of indulgence sales, basing teaching & beliefs purely on the Bible
In Lutheranism, what were some of his major points? What belief system did they follow?
Power in the Bible not the Pope, salvation can only be reached by faith and good deeds.
How did Calvinism differ from Lutheranism as well as the Catholic Church?
They believed in predestination (believe that god has already determined at the beginning of time everyone’s heavenly [or not so heavenly] destiny)
Who was Henry VIII?
The King of England
Why did King Henry VIII break away from the Catholic Church?
They refused to annul his marriage to his wife (she could not conceive a male heir)
What was the Act of Supremacy?
“Act of Parliament” * Government makes choices, not the king himself. Monarchs now have power to rule over the church of England.
