A “rebirth” in trade, learning, and Greco-Roman ideas. During
this time, Europeans developed new ideas in art, government, and human potential. It marked the beginning of the “Modern Era”.
Renaissance
A lengthy span of religious wars between the Christians and the Muslims to take back their homeland. It helped increase European demand for luxury goods from Asia.
Crusades
A city in Italy, where wealth from trade sparked the Renaissance.
Florence
People who sold, traded, and bought items of value.
Merchants
When people became loyal to their king and nation, rather than their lord.
Nationalism
A conflict between England and France from 1337-1453. New military weapons decreased the power of feudal lords and knights.
Hundred Years War
A weapon created after the discovery of Chinese gunpowder, used to help armies penetrate castles.
Cannon
This invention allowed soldiers to shoot accurately up to 300 yards which decreased the importance of knights on horseback.
Long Bow
The leader and one of the most important individuals of the Catholic Church.
Pope
A religious community that was very important during the Renaissance and Middle Ages.
Catholic Church
A deadly disease spread by rats during the Middle Ages and Renaissance Era. Swept quickly through Europe, killing 25 million people. Doctors wore long pointy face coverings with herbs inside to “protect themselves” from such a disease.
Bubonic Plague
A new way of thinking created during the Renaissance Era. It involved the “classical” ideas of Greece and Rome and believed that education could make the world a better place.
Humanism
The “ideal man” that was well educated, smart. could dance, write poetry, and play music. A well rounded individual.
Renaissance Man
A way to exchange ideas, goods, and valuables.
