Patron
A person who supports artists, especially financially.
Da Vinci
An exemplar “Renaissance Man” by being a painter, sculptor, inventor, and scientist. Painted works such as the “Mona Lisa” and “The Last Supper”.
Boccaccio
An Italian writer who is best known for “Decameran”, a series of realistic, almost crude, stories that illustrate the human condition.
Gutenberg Bible
Using the printing press that he invented, Johann Gutenberg invented this complete bible in 1455. It was the first full-sized book printed with movable type.
Medici
The powerful banking family that Florence was under the rule of. The family bank had branches all across Italy and Europe.
Notable Medici rulers:
-Cosimo de Medici (dictator of Florence)
-Lorenzo de Medici (ruled as a dictator, but kept the appearance of having an elected gov’t)
Castiglione
Wrote “The Courtier”, which taught people how to become a “Renaissance Man”.
Raphael
An artist who was famous for his use of perspective. His greatest achievement was painting the walls of Pope Julius II’s library.
Machiavelli
Wrote “The Prince”, which examined the imperfect conduct of human beings. It’s a political guidebook on how a ruler can gain power in spite of their enemies.
Printing press
An invention of German craftsman, Johann Gutenberg. It made it possible to produce books quickly and cheaply.
Humanism
A Renaissance intellectual movement in which thinkers studied classical texts and focused on human potential and achievements.
Isabella d’Este
One of the few women of the time period to exercise their power:
Married ruler of a city-state, Mantua. She brought many Renaissance artists to her court and built famous art collection. She was skilled in politics. When her husband was taken captive, she defended Mantua and won his release.
Perspective
An artistic technique that creates the appearance of 3 dimensions on a flat surface.
Thomas More
Wrote book, “Utopia”, to show better model of society. In the book, greed, corruption, and war were emitted.
Classics
The art of Ancient Greece and Rome, in which harmony, order, and proportion were emphasized.
Michelangelo
- Sculptor, poet, architect, painter
- used realistic style when depicting human body
Vernacular
Everyday language of people in a region or country
Utopia
An imaginary land described by Thomas More in his book “Utopia”, an ideal place
Secular
Concerned with worldly rather than spiritual matters
Donatello
- Artist who made sculpture more realistic by carving natural postures/expressions.
- Made first-free standing nude since ancient times.
Petrarch
- One of the earliest/most influential humanist
- Called “father of Renaissance humanism”
Shakespeare
- Most famous writer of Elizabeth Age
- revived classics and drew from them for inspiration and plots
- many of his plays examine human flaws
Renaissance
A period of European history, lasting from about 1300 to 1600, during which renewed interest in classical culture led to far-reaching changes in art, learning, new views of the world.
