Renaissance period of music
1450-1600 Kings and the nobility set up their own bands of viols, recorders, crumhorns, cornetts, shawms, sackbuts, and trumpets to provide music for worship, entertainment, and ceremonies.
What is a viol?
A bowed instrument with 6 strings, frets, sloping shoulders, a flat back and light stringing that resulted in a thin, soft sound. Viols were held downwards and rested between the knees or legs, leading them to the name ‘viola da gamba’.
What is a recorder?
A wind instrument made of a pipe with holes.
What is a crumhorn?
A double reed wooden pipe with one end curving upwards and finger holes like a recorder. It had a distinctive buzzing sound.
What is a cornett?
A leather covered wooden or ivory pipe with finger holes like a woodwind instrument, a small cup shaped mouthpiece like a trumpet and bright, clear tone.
What is a sackbut?
An early trombone of French origin, but with a more mellow tone.
What is a trumpet?🎺
A brass musical instrument with a flared bell and a bright, penetrating tone.
What is a whole consort?
An ensemble consisting of instruments in the same family.
What is a broken consort?
An ensemble containing instruments from multiple families.
