Vesalius- questioned and proved Galen wrong
The Royal Society- A place for scientists to share new ideas
William Harvey- Proved Vesalius correct
Pare- Cool salve treatment
Ideas on the causes of disease
Calling out Gallen- This was dangerous as Galens ideas were considered the absolute truth
How was disease prevented in the medieval time period?
Miasma- Bad smell
Mass killing of cats and dogs- about 60,000
Isolation- Red Cross on doors
What was public health like in the Renaissance time period?
Some more cleaning of streets etc because of the miasma theory and only some local councils advised not to throw waste onto streets
What was methods for treatment and disease like in the Renaissance time period and how effective was it?
Herbal remedies- mixing herbs to help you feel better (slightly effective and wasn’t dangerous)
4 humours- not effective at all
Religion- not effective at all
Apothecaries- chemists who would recommend treatments at a price
Doctors- They were more knowledgeable as there were a few universities
What changes and stayed the same about causes and treatment of illness and disease during the Renaissance time period?
Fewer people believe in the four humours however most still used the treatments for them
Fewer people believed in supernatural causes
People still believed in miasma
