What was the Renaissance?

A

A period that followed the Europe’s Middle Ages known as a “rebirth”. It was the result of trading and interest in ideas around science, art, culture known as the study of humanities.

A

Florence was known for having considerable wealth through wool trade which inspired the banking industry. Wealth in Florence grew through banks charging interes on loans connected to trade.

What family was prominent in Florence?

A

Cosimo de’ Medici ruled the city and his family were some of the greatest bankers in Florence. He valued education because he needed workers who could read, write, and do math at the banks. He also valued art and culture and wanted to make Florence the most beautiful city in the world.

A

During the Middle Ages people were devoted to Christianity and looked to the bible for answers to their problems. Most of the influential thinkers were from the church.

During the Renaissance they began to study HUMANITIES, the study of the actions and abilities of humans.
