Removing FPDs Flashcards
What are the 3 problems that could cause failures
1) Biological
2) Mechanical
3) Aesthetics
Does poor margins which lead to caries require removal of bridges?
Pain -> need to remove and wear denture
Deep caries -> sub gingival margins -> might not capture better crown margins -> better to keep
Patient -> if patient wants to keep
Age -> old patient can just use until it fails
Time -> how long has it been
Other possible reason for removal due to operator mistake
- incomplete seating of prosthesis during cementation
Considerations prior to crown and bridge disassembly
1) medical contra-indications
2) restorability of abutments
3) status of underlying core structure
4) periodontal status
5) intra-oral access
6) type of cement
7) type of prosthesis material
- EMAX/zirconia -> hard to differentiate between real tooth and crown
- full metal -> very hard to cut through
What must you inform patients prior to crown/bridge removal
- reasons for removal
- possible complications
- treatment options
- make provisional just in case!! Max 2
When to do destructive treatment (remove!)
- prosthesis on perio teeth
- when prosthesis disassembly fails
- prosthesis ca be sectioned
Conservative diassembly
- ## percussion or traction type of force is applied to attempt to break cement seal
