REMOVAL REVIEW (Part 1) Flashcards
It is a list of ligands ordered by their ability to split the d orbitals of central metal ion in a coordination complex.
The spectrochemical series
It is the difference of energy between the two sets of orbitals, one with lower energy and the other with higher energy, when ligand approaches a transition metal ion.
Crystal field splitting energy
It is a ligand that can form multiple coordinate bonds with a single metal ion, creating a ring structure. An example is ethylenediamine.
Chelating ligands
It refers to catalytic reactions where the catalyst is in the same phase as the reactants, typically in a solution. An example is the Wilkinson’s catalyst, RhCl(PPh3)3, used in the hydrogenation of alkenes.
