Purpose:
A
- Promote normal bladder function.
- Prevent trauma to the urethra.

Sterile syringe
Sponges
Waste receptacle
Clean gloves

Preparation:
A
- Verify doctor’s order and check the amount of sterile water used or instilled in the catheter
balloon. - Assess patient’s general condition.
- Perform hand hygiene.
- Prepare equipment needed.
- Bring materials at patient’s bedside.
- Provide privacy.

- Explain the procedure to the patient.

- Wear gloves.

- Clamp catheter and remove adhesive tape.

- Insert the syringe to the injection or balloon port

- Draw out all the water/ fluid.

- Instruct the patient to take a deep breath.

- Gently withdraw the catheter from the urethra.

- Place the catheter in the waste receptacle.

- Dry the genital area with clean cotton balls.

- Measure urine in the drainage bag.

control procedure.
