- Follow steps 1 to 2.

- Position patient at his back or supine with thighs
slightly apart or abducted.

- Drape patient and expose only the area around the
penis.

- Put on disposable glove on non-dominant hand.

- Clean the genital area.
a. If not circumcised, retract foreskin with non-dominant
hand, grasp penis at shaft just below glans, retract
urethral meatus thumb and fingers with non-dominant
hand.
b. Pick-up cotton ball with forceps and clean penis.
Cleanse around the penis and work towards the base.

- Remove gloves and wash hands.

- Adjust light when necessary.

- Place tray between or over patient’s thighs facing front
of bed.

- Follow steps 9-13 of female catheterization procedure.
With your non-dominant hand hold or lift penis
perpendicular to the patient’s body. Retract foreskin in
uncircumcised patient. Keep hand in this position until
catheter is inserted and urine continuously flows.

- Insert catheter 6 to 9 inches, if resistance is felt ask
patient to relax and take a deep breath; then rotate
catheter slightly.

- Observe the urine flow before inflating the balloon

- Follow steps 20-25.

- Straighten patient’s leg and secure catheter to patient’s
thigh with adhesive tape catheter to inside part of thigh
with strip of hypo-allergenic plaster allow for slack so
that movement of thigh does not create tension on the
catheter. Or use the Velcro leg strap if available.
