When did Hitler march onto the Rhineland and how many troops did he bring?
He marched 32,000 troops and armed police onto the Rhineland on the 7th of March 1936.
How did Britain and France react?
They did nothing. They were more worried about Mussolini’s invasion of Abyssinia. German generals had orders to retreat if opposed.
What did Hitler offer?
A peace treaty for 25 years. This calmed the countries that wanted peace while allowing Hitler to get his way.
What were the consequences of Hitler
re-arming the Rhineland?
-Gave Hitler confidence to keep challenging the T of V provisions. E.g: Anschluss with Austria.
Why did remilitarising the Rhineland threaten Europe?
Because Hitler had gone against the T of V
What was the reaction of the people who lived in the Rhineland?
They cheered Hitler’s troops into the Rhineland. This gave Britain and France an excuse as Hitler was welcomed into the Rhineland.
What caused it to happen?
T of V demilitarised the Rhineland (area of Germany which bordered France). German people thought it was humiliating.
