remembering Flashcards
free recall
we recall a piece of info when we receive it from a memory store such as STM without any assistance
cued recall
sometimes we can only recall something if we get assistance from a cue
meaningful cues
‘STM’ is a cue, you learn this at the same time you learn other material about the short term memory, contains the letter ‘S’ which triggers retrieval for ‘short’
cues without meaning
cues without meaning are also learned at the same time as you learn or experience something, if you are learning about STM and there is a thunderstorm outside next time there is a thunderstorm it may cue you to remember something about STM
recognition
In a multiple choice question you may recognise the answer answer, the answer acts as a cue
Tulving and Pearlstone 1966
recognition, asked pps to learn lists of words belonging to different categories, pps were then asked to recall the words, those who were given a category recalled more, the categories provided a context and provided retrieval cues
