Remains Flashcards
Context
Following the documentary about the iraq war
Repetition
‘Somebody else and somebody else’ - he is shifting blame among more people
Enjambment
Gives a fast paced tone and emphasises how the events were like a blur
Repetition of the start
‘Possibly armed, possibly not’ is repeated. Creates a cyclical structure where the trauma is inescapable and ever returning
‘Dug in behind enemy lines’
The trauma remains metaphorically
It is inescapable
Colloquial language
‘Legs it’
Creates a sense of how it happened regularly
Gory language and imagery
‘Sort of inside out’ - vague language where he can’t explain the situation. Very violent and shows how he is not prepared for the killing.
‘Tosses his guts back into his body’ shows the disrespect
Drinks and drugs won’t flush him out
Flush is associated with sickness and cleansing. The soldier is unclean and sick
Sibilance
‘Sun stunned, sand smothered’ - positive is contrasted with violence. Everything is tainted with war
