From third person we to first so the poem is more personal like a confession . In the final couplet both the lines are in the same metre , giving a feeling of guilt

Amusing anecdote but turns into a description of the man’s death . Volta on the fifth stanza where the soldiers tone thoughts and emotions are changed by his guilt
