Pharisees
- means ‘separated’ - separated themselves from life
- they set up schools
- controlled synagogues
- known as the ‘religious police’
What is the Sanhedrin?
Jewish court of law
Who were the Sadducees?
small group of wealthy and powerful men who cooperated with Roman rules and were disliked by common people.
Why did the Sadducees cooperate with the Romans?
Because it would secure their wealth
Why did people not like the Sadducees?
They refused to accept new ideas, they were selfish, rich and power hungry
How did each group deal with Roman occupation?
Pharisees - keep separate
Sadducees - make friends, do a deal
Zealots - kill them
Essenes - rejected the Romans
Who was Pontius Pilate?
Roman leader in Judea
Who was Herod?
Jewish King
Who were the Zealots?
Deeply religious views who believed that violent action was justified if it was in defence of the Jewish religion
What did the Zealots believe?
thought that if people had the courage to rebel against Roman rule, God would send a Messiah - they expected the Messiah to be a military leader
Who were the Essenes?
- Communities of monks who settled in remote places
- Thought they had to separate themselves
Where did the Essenes live and why?
The desert - remote places as they were obeying God by avoiding Jerusalem and the corruption of the Temple.
