Election Flashcards
Limited election
the belief that Christ died to save a few chosen people
Unlimited election
the belief that Christ died to save anyone - everyone can go to heaven
John Calvin
He influenced by Augustine, strong versions of limited selection
Calvinism
- double predestination
- Gods will is hidden
- we don’t know what God knows
- God wills his mercy and grace for all
- elect and non-elect should act morally
- Christians should preach the gospel to all
Election & Universalism
- God’s love means all can achieve salvation
- free-will - everyone can achieve perfection
- no religion/all religions can achieve eternal life
Predestination & Augustine
Predestination was developed by Augustine, He argued that human will is weak so therefore we need salvation. God gives his grace freely. All are called to salvation, but only some are elect.
Single Predestination
God elects the people for heaven
Double Predestination
Some go to heaven, some go to hell
Antelapsarian decree
He has chosen people before the fall
Postlapsarian decree
He has chosen people after the fall (reprobate sinners or elect)
John Hick
Bible = Jesus triumph over death and God of love. If earthly existence is moral journey, it couldn’t end in eternal punishment
Karl Barth
- he argued against the idea that election is choosing a few for heaven and condemning the rest to hell
- he also argues that it is not for humans to speculate on the mystery of salvation and the fate of individuals
- his own version of universalism was to be inclusive of all those who, through the incarnation are ‘in Christ’.
