why did the Puritans go to North America?
they felt that the Church of England was too close to Catholicism- they didn’t want bishops interfering with their practices

was it religiously tolerant?
despite immigrating for religious reasons, it was not a community of religious toleration
not everyone agreed with the views of those in power

Roger Williams- he left Boston within a year
where were other colonies? did they have charters?
they had no charters but began to develop constitutions of their own
Connecticut’s Foundations 1639- congregational approach to religion
Constitution of Rhode Island 1643- permission to everybody to worship freely

Maryland was organised as a late and formal version of the feudal system
Virginia reflected memories of Elizabethan gentlemen and the seadogs
Massachusetts had a moral earnestness and religious intolerance

all had assemblies of local representatives, oversaw legislation and taxation
