when and how was Jamestown founded?
Charles I gave a charter to the Virginia Company in 1606 where they founded Jamestown in Chesapeake Bay
how many of the original settlers died?
60 out of the 100 died by 1607- the first settlers did not know what to do since there was no gold or silver to plunder, the Natives taught them how to grow crops but they were not very good
what problem did the Virginia Company have?
encouraging investors to keep paying them without them seeing how the colony would pay them back
how was this problem solved?
the growth of tobacco and exporting it to England in 1611
how much did exports increase?
20k lbs in 1617 to 350k lbs in 1621-however it was still not enough to enable the company showing profit
how did James I help the company?
by making it illegal to grow tobacco in England in 1619- basically giving the company a monopoly whilst raising money for the government through an import tax on tobacco
what was the population of the colony?
hardly rose above 1000 people due to death and harsh conditions
what caused the charter to be declared as void?
an unexpected attack by the Natives in 1622, in 1624 the charter was declared void
