Religious changes Flashcards
Changes for Protestants
-Prominent Protestant clergy deprived of livings and imprisoned
-Foreign Protestants ordered to leave the country (most had left at this point)
Mary’s first parliament
-Edward’s legislation was appealed
-Order of service at time of Henry VIII’s death was restored
-All clergy married could be deprived of livings
-Legal status of church of England was upheld
-Status of the church wasn’t solved until third parliament in 1554
-Delayed because of monastic lands
Mary’s third parliament
-Pope Julius III wanted monastic lands returned to the church and the church of England to submit to Rome (politically impossible because of Catholic nobles holding lands)
-Reversed Henry’s Act of Attainder against Pole
-Pole was regarded as suspicious because of his attitude towards monastic lands (Archbishop of Canterbury)
-Mary forced to acknowledge statute law
Relationship with the pope
-Pope Julius III died in 1555
-Pope Paul IV was anti-Spanish
-He showed open hostility to Phillip and thought Pole was a heretic
-War broke out between Spain and Pope (Mary pitted against the pope)
-Dismissed Pole as Papal Legate in 1557 (heresy)
-Mary wouldn’t allow Pole to go to Rome to face the charges because she trusted him
-Made her relationship with pope strained
Burning heretics
-280 Protestants burnt
-Included Cranmer, Hooper, Ridley
-21 clergy and 8 gentry, many from humble backgrounds
-Elicited sympathy from public, evident as they tried to ban people from watching
-Failed to extinguish heresy
-Damaged Mary’s reputation
