How is Christ Present During Mass?

A

The Priest:
* Christ is present in the priest, who leads the celebration of Mass, proclaims the Gospel, preaches and offers thanks to God during the Eucharistic Prayer, and does what Jesus did during the Last Supper
* Through the Holy Spirit, he brings the presence of Christ in the elements of bread and wine
* He is a messenger/represents/is from the line of God
* He a acts as a substitute and messenger/in place for Christ
* He leads the community in prayer and praise
* He represents Christ
* He offers prayers on behalf of the people

The Scriptures:
* Christ is present in the readings from Scripture proclaimed at Mass
* When the Scripture is proclaimed at Mass, it is the Lord speaking to us, through these words
* Christ is present in the Gospel (which is received with special ceremony), where we learn of His teachings, actions, and words
* It is one way Jesus speaks to us
* He teaches us of God’s love for us
* Everyone in the church stand, and sometimes light candles or incense to honour Christ’s presence in His word

The Assembled People:
* Christ is present in the group of people who gather to offer the Mass
* Jesus promised to be with His followers when they gather in His name
* His Disciples are members of the Church, Body of Christ, and His continuing presence in the world
* They express, practice, strengthen, and celebrate their faith
* They gather is Jesus’ name, and do what he asked of them
* This is promised in Matthew 18:20
* After the Mass, Jesus is still with us, as we are sent into the world to live according to His teachings
* The final part of the Mass reminds us that Jesus goes with us as we live out our faith

The Bread and Wine:
* Christ is present in the elements of bread and wine, which become His body and blood
* The bread and wine is the most intense and profound mode of the presence of Christ in the Eucharist and Mass
* When Christians eat Bread and drink from the Cup, we enter into communion with His Body and Blood
* We share the very life of Jesus himself and open ourselves to living and loving as He did
* We receive Jesus Himself when receiving Eucharist

What are the similarities between the Last Supper and the Liturgy of the Eucharist?

A

The Last Supper:
* The table Jesus used to share a loaf of bread among his disciples, which he blessed, and claimed was his body
* Jesus and His disciples gathered for the Last Supper
* Jesus broke the Bread (His Body), and shared the Wine (His blood), and dispersed it among his Disciples
* Jesus lead the Last Supper
* The Last Supper was hosted to commemorate Jesus’ life, and his Sacrifice for Catholics on the Cross
* Jesus said several significant phrases to his Disciples
* Jesus gave thanks to God for His blessings
Jesus said: “This is my body… This is my blood…”, and “Do this in remembrance of me”

The Liturgy of the Eucharist:
* The Priest uses the altar to bless the Host, and break it, to share among the community
* Catholics gather to recreate the Last Supper
* The Priest breaks the Host (Jesus’ Body), and shares the Wine (Jesus’ Blood) among the members of the Mass
* The Priest leads the Liturgy of the Eucharist in Jesus and God’s stead
* The Eucharist is hosted to commemorate Jesus’ life, and his Sacrifice for Catholics on the Cross
* The Priest reflects and quotes these phrases
* The Priest thanks God for the gift of His Son, and Jesus’ Sacrifice

How do we live out Mass in our daily lives?

A
  • Mass challenges us to take the love, forgiveness, and mercy of Jesus out into the world
  • We are reminded to love and forgive, as Jesus does for/to us, and as we are called to do for others
  • We are also reminded to help those in need, and serve others especially the less fortunate)
  • After Mass, we are sent to be Jesus’ hands and feet, helping those in our community
