Engaged Buddhism
A movement in Buddhist that is concerned with applying buddhas teachings to social justice and environmental justice
Social justice
Ensuring that society treats people fairly whether they are poor or wealthy, protecting people’s human rights
Human rights
The basic rights and freedoms all humans are entitled to
Freedom of religion
The right to believe or practice whatever religion one chooses
Freedom of religious expression
The right to worship, preach and practice ones faith in whatever way one chooses
Prejudice
Unfairly judging someone before the facts are known, holding biased opinions about an individual or group
Discrimination
Actions or behaviour that result from prejudice
Exploitation
Misuse of power or money to get others to do things for little or unfair reward
Rights
Something we are entitled to, but our responsibility to keep them and carry them out
Education, assembly, association, press, speech, religion etc

Christians: support them, help those in need, golden rule
Buddhism: Karuna metta (loving kindness), so agree with them helps reach enlightenment, first precept: do not harm and living thing’
Prejudice and discrimination
Sexism, racism, homophobia
Old beliefs are controversial across religion,
Against: golden rule, there is no woman, no man, no slave, no master, we are all one in christ’
For: Genesis only Adam and Eve have a normal relationship so no one should have anything different
Help the poor
Government, communities, charity
Help people in need’ golden rule’
