Religion, Relationships And Families Flashcards
Explain what sex should be like for Catholics.
1) Marital
2) Unitive
3) Procreative
Explain what Marital, Unitive and Procreative means and why sexual love should include these words.
1) Marital means within marriage. Marriage is the ultimate commitment, made before God, who gave sex to humans as a gift.
2) Unitive means to bond the couple. Sex deepens love between the couple, they become closer and committed to eachother.
3) Procreative means to reproduce. God creates new life through sex.
Give one quote which links to sex being Marital, Unitive and Procreative.
1) Marital: “The sexual act outside marriage is a grave sin” (CCC)
2) Unitive: “The two shall become one flesh” (Mark 10)
3) Procreative: “Be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis)
What are some Catholic Contrasting views on Sex before marriage?
1) Catholics believe that God gave humans the gift of sex to reproduce therefore sex should only happen when new life is a possibility. (Catholic View.) Everyone has the right to have sex when they are ready. Being celibate should not be expected. (Contrasting View.)
2) Sex before marriage devalues the act. (Catholic View) Today it is common for people to have pre-marital sex. The Church should accept is as a part of modern life.
3) Casual sex is wrong, it can cause hurt to others. Sex should only be with someone that you love. (Catholic View) As long as you are in a loving and caring relationship, that is all that matters. (Contrasting View)
What happens during a Catholic Marriage?
1) Greeting- Congregation join to celebrate the marriage.
2) Liturgy of the Word- Priest talks about meaning of Catholic Marriage. Mentions dignity and God’s role. Mentions responsibilities of marriage.
3) Priest questions the couple 3 times: “Have you come to give yourself to eachother?” “Will you love and honour eachother for life?” “ Will you accept children from God?”
4) Marriage Vows- Moment of Sacrament. Couple say “ I do take thee to be my lawful wedded wife/husband, to have an to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, to love and to cherish, till death do us part”
5) Acceptance of Consent and Blessing- Priest declares the Marriage.
6) Ring exchanges- Ring is given as a sign of love and fidelity.
7) Marriage Blessing- Blessing given.
8) Register signed- Civil requirements.
What are the conditions for a valid Catholic Marriage? Give 6
1) Priest must be present.
2) Couple must not be related.
3) Must be free to marry
4) Must be willing to accept children
5) The couple must have had sex
6) Both promise to remain together
What are contrasting views on same sex marriage in society?
1) Marriage is a sacrament between a man and a woman. (Catholic View.) In 2014, the British Government legalised same sex marriage. (Contrasting view)
2) Same sex married couples cannot have children naturally and lovingly from God therefore they cannot reach the requirements for a valid marriage.(Catholic View) Many people in British Society (including Christians) believe that homosexuals should have equal rights to heterosexuals and should be able to marry. They do not see having children as an essential part of marriage.
Explain what Cohabitation is. Why does the Catholic Church disagree with Cohabitation?
1) Cohabitation is an unmarried couple living together.
2) The Catholic Church disagrees with Cohabitation because it breaks the sanctity of the sexual union, breaks the sanctity of marriage, it may destroy the sense of family.
Explain what an Annulment is and why might one be allowed?
1) An annulment is a statement from the Catholic Church saying that the marriage was not marriage in the first place.
2) An annulment may be allowed if:
The partner doesn’t take the exclusive nature of marriage seriously (if one partner has affairs).
The couple never had sexual intercourse
Used contraception, refusing God’s gift of children.
They were forced to marry.
What is a divorce and what are Catholic Views on divorce?
1) A divorce is a legal result of ending a marriage, when the couple cannot carry on living together.
2) The Catholic Church believe that marriage promises made before God cannot be broken.
They believe that God made man and woman to be united as one.
Jesus taught that a divorcee remarrying commits adultery.
Marriage is “till death do us part”
What is remarriage and what is the Catholic Church’s view on remarriage?
1) Remarriage is when a person who has been married before goes on to marry another person.
2) The Catholic Church believe that:
Remarriage can only happen if the original partner has died.
Anyone who divorces and remarries cannot receive communion.
Allowed if the first marriage is annulled, therefore it is not a remarriage.
Not allowed to remarry in church if the original spouse is still alive.
What are some contrasting views on Divorce and Remarriage?
1) Divorce:
People should stick by their marriage promises, they made them infront of God. (Catholic View)
It is impossible to know what the future holds, if the marriage has broken down then divorce may be the compassionate solution(Other view)
2) Remarriage:
If the original spouse is still living then it should not happen, ‘a new union cannot be recognised as valid, if the first marriage was’ (Catholic view)
Most protestant denominations will not stop those who remarry from receiving communion, unlike Catholicism.
Where does the Catholic Church stand in regards to Contraception and Family Planning?
1) The Catholic Church believes that using artificial contraception is not allowed due to the fact that it makes sex non-procreative and separates the two purposes of sex.
2) In regards to Family Planning, the Catholic Church allows it as long as it is done naturally.
What are some contrasting views in regards to Contraception and Family Planning?
1) -If partners don’t have sex with others before or outside of marriage, then there is little chance of contracting an STI. (Catholic View)
- Many people including Catholics believe that contraception isn essential to stopping the spread of STIs. (Other View)
- The final decision about pregnancies should be left up to God. (Catholic View)
- It is responsible to use contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies. (Other View)
- Genesis says to ‘be fruitful and multiply’, we shouldn’t decline God’s gift, lovingly intended for a married couple. (Catholic View)
- The world is becoming overpopulated, so limiting family sizes is a responsible action. (Other View)
What does the Catholic Church value a family as and what are its main tasks?
1) The Catholic Church values the family as a Church in miniature.
2) Its main tasks are to:
Form a community
To help with the life and personal development of eachother.
To take part in the development in the wider society.
To be part of the life and mission of the Church.
