Creation Flashcards
What is the structure of the Bible?
1) The Bible is split up into the Old and New Testament.
What is the structure of the Old Testament?
1) Law- First 5 book explaining how Jews became the people of God. Contains 10 commandments.
History- Shows how God guided the Jews and how they often refused to listen to him.
Wisdom- Includes a mixture of prayers, psalms, poems and books of advice. Helps people understand their faith.
Prophecy- Books of the prophets whose inspired words challenged the people to remain faithful.
What is the structure of the New Testament?
1) Gospels- Actions and Teachings of Jesus.
2) Acts of Apostles- Tells some of the events in the early church.
3) The Epistles- Letters written by Apostles and discuss how to follow Jesus’ teachings.
4) Book of Revolution- Written by the Apostle John. Includes his own mystical visions
What does Genesis 1 describe?
What does the Magisterium teach about Genesis 1?
1) Genesis 1 describes God creating the Universe.
2) The Magisterium teaches that the creation stories in Genesis is a myth
Explain what God created on each day in the creation story.
Day 1) Light Day 2) The Sky Day 3) Earth, Seas and Plant Life Day 4) Sun, moon and stars Day 5) Fish and birds Day 6) Humans and animals Day 7) God rested, made it holy.
What can God’s nature be described as?
1) Creator
2) Transcendent
3) Omnipotent
How is God seen as the Creator?
1) God is the only creator who has created all. This means that Christians should only worship this one God.
2) All of creation is special, since it was created by God. Therefore it should be looked after.
3) “God created humans in his own image, male and female, he created them”
How is God seen as Omnipotent?
1) God has the power to do whatever he wants. He can create thins from nothing.
2) Belief in God’s omnipotence inspires Christians to trust in God, as they know that he has the power to change everything.
3) “God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good”
How can God be seen as Transcendent?
1) God only needs his own words in order to create.
2) The idea of transcendence also means that God is beyond human understanding. God cannot be understood or described by human minds.
3) “Then God said ‘Let there be light’; and there was light”
What are 2 ways in which the Nature of Humans can be seen as in Genesis 2?
1) Humans are the gift of free will.
2) Humans share the spirit of God.
How can humans be seen as sharing the spirit of God in Genesis 2?
1) Genesis 2 explains how God made humans in his image.
2) Adam was created by God breathing into him. In Hebrew, ‘breath’ can be translated as “r’uach” which can also be translated as spirit. This shows how humans share the spirit of God.
3) “Breathed into his nostrils the breath of life”
How can humans be seen as the gift of free will?
1) Genesis 2 describes how God made the Garden of Evil for Adam. Adam can eat from any tree but the tree of knowledge of good and evil says God.
2) Even though God “commanded” Adam not to eat from the tree of knowledge, he gives him a choice/free will to decide wether to eat from it or not.
What can we learn from Michelangelo’s painting of Adam and God with his angels? Give 4 points
1) God’s white hair- shows God is ancient, eternal, whereas humanity is new.
2) Adam and God lying in similar positions- shows that humans are made in the image of God.
3) Adams hands reaching out to God- shows that humans need for a close relationship with God.
4) God inside a cloud shaped like a brain- our intelligence comes from God.
Who made the “Hand of God” and what can it tell us about Creation?
The Hand of God was made by Hildreth Meiere.
1) The lines extend all the way to the edge of the circle. Represents the end of the universe.
2) God’s hand is larger than the cloud above it. Helps to show God’s greatness and power.
Do Christians prefer Michelangelo’s painting or the “Hand of God” mosaic by Hildreth Meiere? Why is this?
1) Christians tend to prefer to mosaic because only God’s hand is shown which can show that God is infinite.
2) People also believe that the mosaic is more abstract. It shows that God creates everything, but shows less of God’s involvement with humanity.
