-they occur when those who have traditional values feeling threatened by modern identities
-modern values as being a direct challenge or insult to their religious values EG-LGBT and same sex couples
-lash out and engage in active protests

fundamentalism doesnt always take place in modern society eg Taliban
Fundamentalism is a reaction of cosmopolitanism of post modernists
cosmopolitansim:forward thinking people, willing to modify opinions as society advances
-respect peoples rights and believe people have a degree of free will and choice
-reflexive:evaluating world around them

1)project identity:ways in which they embrace the way of living
2)resistance identity:feel threatened by wider society and fight back against it

-some fundalmetlists groups fro agree with some aspects of cosmopolitism
fundamentalism is more common in monotheistic religions which dominate globally
monotheistic:only one god eg- religion and islam
-more likely to get fundamentalist groups within these two religions
-due to them being less tolerant,based around ultimate authority of an all powerful male god
