What is an ethnic minority?
A group within a community which has different national or cultural traditions from the main population.
What are some of the dietary requirements a Muslim may require?
Must have Halal meat.
Can’t eat pork.
Can’t have alcohol.
What are some of the dietary requirements a Jew may require?
Kosher meat.
Cows cannot be eaten.
Cannot eat meat and dairy together.
How can someone’s ethnicity affect their self-concept?
People may be racist towards them - this could lead to a low self-concept.
How can discrimination affect an individual’s emotional health and wellbeing?
They will have a low self-esteem - this can lead to depression.
What is the definition of ethnicity?
To be related to a culture of race.
What is the definition of culture?
The way of life a whole society or particular groups within that society; it would include the norms and values of that group - the way they live.
What factors can be related to a person’s culture?
Language Beliefs Values Diet Music and sport Clothing
What are the two types of discrimination?
Direct - Open and deliberate.
Indirect - Not deliberate; not obvious.
How could a person’s self-concept be affected if their culture is not respected?
They will have a low self-concept because they will not feel valued. They may also feel angry that nobody has made the effort to find out what’s best for them.
What is the definition of multi-cultural?
Made up of many different people from a wide range of races.
What is the definition of stereo-typing?
To consider people from a particular group to be the same.
Why are religious beliefs important to people?
It gives people a sense of personal identity.
