Religion and Hegemony

A

Hegemony is ideological domination or leadership of society and upon this being established the ruling class rely on popular consent so they dont need to co-erce.
But this isntalways the case and there may be counter hegemony. Popular forms of religion can see through ruling class hegemony by offering a fairer more equal world. Gramsci sees religon as hab=ving a dual personality and can either support/disregard ruling class ideology.

Billings studied textile workers/miners
textile workers accept status quo and miners were more militant and complained and wanted more rights.
- Leadership : Miners had organic intellectual leaders, helping to convert miners to union cause
- Support : Miners had worhship and sermons keeping morale high, text workers did not
- Organisation : miners were able to use church halls and empty spaces for meetings wheras textile workers didnt have this space
BILLINGS says the same religion can be used to either protect or work against the status quo
