Q

1) Why might people want to give their children a religious upbringing?
2) How might this lead a child to believe in god?

A

1)
- some Christians want to give their children what they believe is the right faith
- parents may want their children to believe and hold important the same things they do
- some Christians promise to raise any children they have as Christians when they get married
2) this may lead the child to believe in God because they become familiar and used to religious ideas, meet other young people with similar beliefs and share the same experiences as others in their community

Q

1) what is a religious experience?
2) why might a religious experience make somebody believe in God?
3) what are the different types of religious experience?

A

1) A religious experience is something that makes a person think that they have come into contact with God
2) this kind of experience usually leads to the person having a new or increased belief in God = usually because they see this as some kind of realistic proof
3) there are four different types of religious experience:
- numinous
- miracle
- prayer
- conversion

6
Q

1) Why might miracles convince someone that God is real?

2) What are some examples/evidence miracle are real?

A

1) Because it seems like only God could have done it - there is no other possible explanation.
2) - well, Christians believe God can still work miracles
- many people say incredible events in their lives are miracles (e.g. A “miraculous” recovery from an illness)
- in France, Lourdes gets thousands of visitors every year hoping for a miracle
- the Bible contains examples of Jesus performing miracles such as walking on water

8
Q

Why might a numinous experience make someone believe in God?

A
  • People may experience something that completely takes their breath away
  • It could be an amazing view, for example,
  • But for some being in the presence of something awesome convinces them that something greater than them exists; that God is real

Q

Summarise the four main reasons why religious experience might lead to belief in God?

A
  • It proves that God exists
  • It changes people’s lives
  • There must be a reason why such events occur
  • It makes people aware of the presence of God and that he is real

Q

Summarise the four main reasons why religious experience might NOT lead to belief in God?

A
  • People might be lying about it
  • People might be ill or under the influence of drugs or hallucinating
  • People might be capable of these things and we are not yet aware of it
  • Science can explain or will be able to explain why some things happen

16
Q

Why might the design argument lead people to believe in God OR briefly talk me through how the design argument works?

A

1 - to design something takes intelligence and thought
2 - the world shows evidence of design
3 - therefore a being with intelligence and thought must have designed it
4 - therefore only God could have intelligence and thought enough to design the world
5 - therefore as the world exists God must exist too.

17
Q

Can you explain with more depth the design argument?

A

+ The philosopher William Paley used the idea of design to try and prove the existence of God.
+ He looked inside a watch and said “if something so complex like this requires a designer, then by analogy, the universe would also need a designer”
+ he meant that it (the earth) was too complex to happen “randomly”
+ he reasoned the only being capable of designing the universe is God + therefore God exists

18
Q

What are some arguments against the design argument?

A

Some arguments against design are:
+ that the appearance of design could be the result of evolution
+ the argument only suggests a designer and does not prove gods existence
+ there are examples of poor design in the universe
+ and it is possible that it came about by chance

19
Q

What is the causation argument?

A
  • The argument that everything must have been started off or caused by something else
  • It is used to try to prove the existence of God and is based on the evidence from the world around us

21
Q

What does the causation argument rely on?

A

+ This argument relies on something called cause and effect
+ everything that happens (effect) must have something that has made it happen (cause)
+ An example of this is:
- a row of dominoes falls (effect) AND someone pushed the first one (cause)
- a universe exists (effect) AND someone (God) must have made it (cause).

22
Q

Briefly talk me through the causation argument?

A
  1. Nothing happens by itself; everything needs a cause
  2. Therefore the universe must have a cause
  3. Only God could have caused a universe to come about
= therefore there must be a god
23
Q

Briefly list some problems with the causation argument?

A
  • Some problems with this argument are that a person could ask: “if God caused the universe then who or what caused god?”
  • the Christian answer is that no one made god, he always existed
  • this means the causation argument cannot be proved
24
Q

Briefly list some reasons why people might not believe in God?

A
\+ Scientific explanations
      - The Big Bang Theory
      - Evolution
 \+ The problem of evil
 \+ Unanswered prayers
 \+ Religion and the media
25
Q

Why might people not believe in God because of a scientific explanation?

A
  • Well, because there are MANY suggestions as to how the universe began cosmology based on scientific theories
  • There’a a very solid counter-argument = the most excepted cosmological theory!
  • It is the big bang theory.
+ Most scientists think that almost 14,000,000,000 years ago, the universe came into existence in a rapid explosion.
+ From this big bang came everything that exists; atoms, planets, stars, galaxies.
  • There is some evidence to back up the Big Bang theory:
+ The evidence that the Big Bang occurred is background radiation
+ this radiation showing the universe was once much hotter
+ and red light/red shift (expanding lightwaves make red light) showing that the universe is STILL expanding
26
Q

Why might a scientific explanation, such as the big bang theory, support why people might NOT believe in God?

A

+ Some scientists believe the universe started as a result of a huge concentration of energy causing a massive explosion they call the big bang
+ this can be seen as offering a scientific explanation for the universe without the need for a God
+ this means that God did not necessarily have to have created the universe

27
Q

Why might a scientific explanation, such as the big bang theory, actually SUPPORT belief in God?

A

+ The creation story in Genesis starts by God saying “let there be light” + so many Christians see this as God causing the big bang which was his way of starting creation
+ the seven day creation is seen by many as a poem and not a historical account

28
Q

What are creationists?

A

+ A few Christians believe that science is wrong because it conflicts with biblical ideas
+ they may take the seven day creation story in Genesis more literally + these are creationists

28
Q

What is another scientific explanation that may lead people to not believe in god?

A

Evolution & the evolutionary process

29
Q

Why might evolution support belief in god?

A

+ Many people believe evolution and natural selection are more logical explanations for the existence of humanity = you are not, and we were not, as a species, created instantly by God.
+ Charles Darwin believed in order to survive lifeforms must adapt (evolve) to the changing environment or die
+ the strongest or fittest will evolve maintaining the existence of that particular species

30
Q

Why might evolution NOT support belief in God?

A
  • Christians believe humanity is special, made to be able to connect spiritually with God
  • although they would not normally believe in evolution (e.g. from an ape), they would except we have developed in skills, thinking and even posture
  • they point out that there are far too many missing links in the chain of evolutionary theories to be acceptable
31
Q

What are some Christian counter-arguments to the scientific explanations that often lead people to NOT believe in God?

A

> Many scientists still believe God is responsible for the design of the world
only God could have made sure that the world was made as beautiful as it is
some Christians except the scientific theories and say they do not conflict with belief in God
scientific theories such as the big bang, steady state and oscillating universe are only ideas; they have not been proven
god started the big bang
the seven days of the week in Genesis could be seven ages of time > the Biblical story is symbolic, it shows god was the creator and is not meant to be believed literally

32
Q

How might the problem of evil lead someone to not believe in God?

A

} the existence of evil and suffering in the world is one of the STRONGEST arguments against the existence of God
} If god made the world, then why does he allow them (evil and suffering) to exist?

33
Q

What are the types of evil?

A

There are two types of evil:
~ natural evil: things which cause suffering but have nothing to do with humans, e.g. natural disasters, such as earthquakes.
~ moral evil: actions done by humans which cause suffering to others, e.g. crimes, such as murder or robbery

34
Q

Briefly explain how the problem of evil proves that God cannot exist?

A

1) if God is omni-benevolent, he would WANT to remove evil and suffering
2) if God is omniscient, he would KNOW how to remove evil and suffering
3) if God is omnipotent, he would be ABLE to remove evil and suffering
4) Yet evil and suffering exist
= Therefore, God cannot exist.

35
Q

Can you name a Christian response or counter argument to the problem of evil, which would usually not support belief in God?

A

+ Christian response to this would be to say that God gave humans ‘free will.’
+ free will = this means the ability and right to choose what we do
+ Christians believe that evil is not a result of God but of the choices humanity makes
+ for God to intervene and stop evil, it would mean taking away a free will and imposing his will

36
Q

Why might unanswered prayers lead people to not believe in God?

A

+ some people would say that unanswered prayers are evidence that God doesn’t exist, as otherwise people would get answer to their prayers, particularly ones of the benefit of others in tragic situations around the world

37
Q

What’s the Christian counter-argument to the fact that unanswered prayers sometimes lead people to not believe in God?

A

Many people feel they make some form of connection with God when they pray, WHETHER they get what they ask for or not

38
Q

Summarise the arguments and evidence that God does not exist?

A

> God cannot be all good and ignore prayers
He would and should at least respond to believers
He cannot be all powerful and all knowledgeable and still not answer everyone’s prayers

39
Q

Summarise the Christian responses and counter-arguments to the brief summaries & evidence that God does not exist?

A

> God is like a father so sometimes he may respond to prayers with a “no”
he responds in unexpected ways - sometimes we cannot always see them (his responses) or why he may have done that
some prayers are selfish and it would be chaos to answer everyone’s

40
Q

What is the media?

What can it affect?

A

The media is TV, radio, film and other such things, et cetera, and can affect a persons attitude towards religion

41
Q

What are some examples of a form of media that affects a person’s attitude towards religion?

A

> “The root of all evil?”

> “Rev.”

42
Q

What is “The root of all evil”?

A

The root of all evil is a television documentary written and presented by Richard Dawkins in which he argues that the world would be better off without religion

43
Q

What is “Rev.”?

A

“Rev.” is a BBC comedy about a vicar of a city Parish.
It shows him struggling to be a good Christian as well as a good husband, et cetera.
He is often shown to be very human

44
Q

What could some religious programmes in the media do?

A

+ Some religious programs show how religion can benefit the life of an individual and how it can be a positive thing.
+ Some religious programs can portray religion as something to laugh at and ridicule or question gods existence. They may suggest religious believers are crazy or that there is something wrong with being religious.

45
Q

What is resurrection?

A

The belief that, after death, the body stays in the grave until the end of the world when it is raised.

46
Q

What is immortality of the soul?

A

The idea that the soul lives on after the death of the body.

47
Q

What do Christians believe about life after death?

A
  • Christians believe in life after death.
  • Most believe that the soul goes to God for judgement.
  • Also that those who have been good will be rewarded in heaven and those who have been bad will go to hell
  • Roman Catholics also believe in a place between heaven and hell good purgatory where people’s sins have to be forgiven first
48
Q

What is often seen as evidence for Christians beliefs about life after death?

A

> JESUS’ EXAMPLE –> Jesus rose from the dead and he told his followers that they would have everlasting life (John 3:16). Also relevant: “My father’s house has many rooms,” (John 14:2), and “I am the resurrection and the life,” (John 11:25).
IT’S IN THE BIBLE –> The Bible talks about life after death and the early Christian leaders including Saint Paul talk about life after death.
CHURCH TEACHING –> The church has always accepted and taught the belief in life after death even if opinions differ as to what form it takes.
GIVES PURPOSE –> Life after death gives the meaning and purpose to life we live now.

49
Q

What do Christian beliefs about life after death affect?

What will this encourage them to do?

A
  • These beliefs will affect the way Christians live their lives
  • They will try to live by the teachings of the bible and the church because they believe they will be judged
  • They will try to do good work, putting Christian teachings into action and might pray to God or confess their sins
