why the YOUNG are LESS RELIGIOUS?
Young people are less likely to be socialised into RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. VAOS suggest that this could be due to the growth of INTER-FAITH MARRIAGES. SUNDAY SCHOOL which was once PREVALENT is now RARE, reducing its APPEAL to children, this links with HERVIEU -LEGERS view of CULTURAL AMNESIA. In 2015, nearly 90% of 10-14 YEAR OLDS felt that CHURCH WAS BORING, and they COULDN’T RELATE TO THE RITUALS/ TEACHINGS so AVOIDED ATTENDANCE. COLLINS- MAYO found that RELIGION has become a PERSONAL CHOICE in POST MODERN SOCIETY, the YOUNG DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO AFFILIATE with a PARTICULAR RELIGION and would RATHER SPEND THEIR WEEKENDS doing LEISURE ACTIVITIES.

By 2025, it is predicted that ONLY 2.5% of REGULAR CHURCH GOERS will be between 15 and 19 YEARS OLD
The only group to show a RISE IN CHURCH ATTENDANCE is people OVER 65
why the ELDERLY are MORE RELIGIOUS?
The AGING EFFECT suggest that as people come closer to DEATH, interest in SPIRITUALITY INCREASES. This leads to GREATER RELIGIOSITY as people look for ANSWERS ON THE AFTER LIFE and FORGIVENESS OF THEIR PAST SINS.
THE current ELDERLY GENERATION may be MORE RELIGIOUS due to their UPBRINGING which was LESS SECURE than TODAY’S YOUTH due to WARS.
