Martin Luther spoke out against the churches for manipulating the fear of hell against its followers, and was executed for it.

An indulgence is a way to reduce the punishment for sins that have already been forgiven.
Define a religious ritual.
A Religious Ritual is a tradition that you participate i in support of your beliefs
Be able to understand Conflict Theory and Religion.
Religion is important form a Conflict Theory perspective because division in beliefs leads to a more diversified society.
Karl Marx and Religion.
Marx viewed religion as a tool to control others in society.
Secular Society and the United States.
Secular Society is the belief that church and state should be separate.
Be Familiar with Durkheim’s function of religion theory.
Durkheim believes that religion is the idea that the universe is both physical and holy.
Be familiar with the foundations of Scientology.
Scientology is the study and handling and the relationship of the spirit.
Be familiar with Hubbard, who founded Scientology.
Hubbard created Scientology in 1952 after losing the intellectual rights to his literature on Dianetics in bankruptcy.
Is sociology more than common sense? Revisited from the beginning of the semester.
I would say sociology is much more than just common sense, and debunking myths and stereotypes. Sociology at its core is the study of human behavior, and common sense is just one part of the human psychology.
John Calvin and Predestination.
Calvinism believes that you are predestined to go to heaven or hell at conception, and being a follower of Christ means you were spared by god to go to heaven.
