Religion Flashcards
- Wilson believes that the one being that has the right to judge is God – even while he judges his own wife - a hypocricy
- An interesting notion to compare to Nick’s judgements throughout the entire novel
“You may fool me, but you can’t fool God!’”
Doctor T.J. Eckleburg is symbolic of the watching eyes of God.
Oppressive supervision of the poor (valley of ashes) by the rich (Doctor) - the control Tom has over Mr. Wilson
Eckleburg’s constant gaze is definitely ominous, since so much immoral activity is constantly going on – especially in the Valley of Ashes.
(“The eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic”)
“God sees everything” repeated Wilson.
When we read this, it hit us that religion is pretty much absent from all the characters’ lives. Here it only serves as an excuse for Tom’s not marrying Myrtle.
“She’s a Catholic, and they don’t believe in divorce.” Daisy was not a Catholic, and I was a little shocked at the elaborateness of the lie.”
Tom and Eckelburg exchange frowns. It’s like Tom is staring defiantly at a disapproving God, angry that anybody would dare judge him. You could interpret that as Tom being condescending even to God.
“Terrible place, isn’t it,” said Tom, exchanging a frown with Doctor Eckleburg.
