Dissatisfaction Flashcards
Daisy pretends that she’s happy she’s had a girl, but she’s not. Girls of any class seem to be the losers in this world
‘I’m glad it’s a girl. And I hope she’ll be a fool – that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.’”
Tom’s problem is that he peaked too early, playing football at Yale. It’s hard to be satisfied with a normal life
“I felt that Tom would drift on forever seeking”
You’d think that returning from war would make Nick satisfied to live a quiet life with his family—but it doesn’t. It just makes him restless and, yep, dissatisfied.
“Instead of being the warm center of the world, the Middle West now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe—so I decided to go East and learn the bond business.”
James Gatz is dissatisfied with his whole being, so starts again to satisfy himself
“James Gatz – that was really, or at least legally, his name. He had changed it at the age of seventeen and at the specific moment that witnessed the beginning of his career”
Gatsby is dissatisfied with what his life’s become, so tries to go back to his past (Daisy). This seems to be a theme with Gatsby, constantly being dissatisfied with himself.
“He talked a lot about the past, and I gathered that he wanted to recover something”
Nick is dissatisfied with the crowd he hangs around with, the last line he says to Gatsby.
“They’re a rotten crowd,” I shouted across the lawn. “You’re worth the whole damn bunch put together.”
Nick is dissatisfied with the way Tom and Daisy are dealing with this tragedy
“They were careless people, Tom and Daisy – they smashed up things up and then retreated back into their money”
