Reliance on Fossil Fuels- LO1: Flashcards
Fossil fuel
A fuel consisting of the remains of organisms preserved in rocks in the Earths crust with high carbon and hydrogen content
Renewable energy
Is a form of energy derived from natural sources that do not use up natural resources to harm the environment
Renewable energy sources will
-never run out
-can be replenished in a human lifetime
-E.g wind,solar,biomass and tidal sources
Fossil fuels will
-Run out
-cannot be replenished in a human lifetime
Formation of coal
-dead remains of plants
-fall and accumulate on the ground overtime
-increasing weight compresses remains into peat
-over hundreds of millions of years the peat gets further compressed and temp increase
-remains turn into different grades of coal which can be mined by humans
Formation of crude oil and natural gas
-dead remains of sea organisms
-settle on bottom of ocean
-sediment gather on top causing increase in pressure leading to increased temp
-over hundreds of millions of years pressures and temperatures become sufficient to cause crude oil to form
-in underground crude oil wells in crude oil fields, natural gas gets trapped at top with crude oil below
- humans drill on land to extract fuels
What year was the industrial revolution? and what was used to cover the transport cooking and heating needs of people?
1760s - biomass( wood, grass and vegetation) alongside wind
% of energy needs met by fossil fuels in 1960s
94%
% of energy needs met by fossil fuels in 2015
80%
