Q

Why is good reliability important in schizophrenia?

A
  1. Inconsistencies in diagnosis can disrupt patient’s life.
  2. Inconsistencies may leave patients deprived of medication.
  3. Some may be labelled as schizophrenic when in actual fact they’re not.

Q

What is one strength of the reliability of schizophrenia?

A
  1. Research suggests that SZ has good inter-rater reliability (IR).
Osorio et al: found IR score of +0.97 and, test-retest score of +0.92.
Above +0.8 - good reliability (strong agreement). Shows SZ is well defined and separate from other disorders.
Therefore, diagnosis of SZ is consistently applied.

Q

What are two weaknesses of the reliability of schizophrenia?

A
  1. Research shows cultural bias in diagnosis.
Harrison et al: those with West Indian background more likely to be diagnosed than any other group in Bristol.
Shows that white dominated areas have institutional racism in hospitals leading to stereotypes.
Therefore, raises qs with reliability as, patient can present same symptoms but be diagnosed differently based on their race.
  2. Research shows gender bias in diagnosis.
Loring and Powell: men more than twice as likely to be diagnosed than women.
Shows women’s schizophrenic symptoms may be blamed on hormones and emotions.
Therefore, raises qs with reliability as, patient can present same symptoms but be diagnosed differently based on their gender.
