What is schizophrenia?
A severe mental disorder which distorts contact with reality and impairs insight and, is characterised by hallucinations and distortions.
What is meant by positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Symptoms which are experienced in addition to normal experience.
What are three positive symptoms of schizophrenia?
Hallucinations, delusions and word salad.
What are Hallucinations?
A positive symptom of schizophrenia which is unusual sensory experience that can be picked up by any sense and that isn’t real.
What are delusions?
A positive symptom of schizophrenia which is irrational beliefs which may be grandeur (believing you’re someone historical), paranoia (being watched) or external control (controlled by external factors).
What is meant by negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Symptoms that represent loss of usual experience.
What are two negative symptoms of schizophrenia?
Speech poverty and avolition.
What is speech poverty?
A negative symptom of schizophrenia where the quality and frequency of speech is reduced.
What is avolition?
A negative symptom of schizophrenia where one experiences a loss of motivation and struggles with goal directed behaviour.
What is meant by word salad?
A positive symptom of schizophrenia where one’s speech is disorganised - usually involves random words and constant changing of subject.
What is used to diagnose schizophrenia?
The DSM-5 and ICD-10
What is the difference between the DSM-5 and ICD-10?
- DSM-5 only has one type of SZ whereas ICD-10 has 5.
- DSM-5 predominantly used in USA whereas ICD-10 used in Europe.
What is meant by comorbidity?
The occurrence of two disorders together e.g SZ and bipolar.
What is meant by symptom overlap?
Where two or more conditions share symptoms.
What is meant by the classification of mental disorder?
The process of organising symptoms into categories based on which symptoms frequently cluster together.
