conscious
everything we are aware of in the present moment
preconscious
Everything we are not aware of in the present moment but can become aware of with easy prompt (like a phone number). Mild emotional experiences may be here but more deep rooted, threatening to our nervous system experiences may be kept in the unconscious
unconscious
Unconscious contains all sorts of significant and disturbing material which we need to keep out of awareness because it’s too threatening to acknowledge fully. We have primitive motives and emotions stored in the unconscious. Our rational, conscious selves deem these motives and emotions as too threatening, so we develop coping mechanisms to keep them hidden.
