inferior
body part is below another body part or is toward the feet
superior
body part is above another part or is closer to the head
anterior (ventral)
toward the front
posterior (dorsal)
opposite of anterior, means toward the back
medial
imaginary midline dividing the body into equal right and left halves. body part is medial if it is closer to this line than another body part
lateral
toward the side with respect to the imaginary middling (opposite of medial)
bilateral
paired structures, one on each side

proximal
a body part that is closer to the point of attachment to the trunk than another body part
distal
opposite of proximal, a particular body part is further away from a point of attachment to the trunk than another body part
