Relationships In Ecosystems Flashcards
Interdependence
Organisms depending on other organisms for survival.
Habitat
Where organisms live.
Competition
Two organisms attempting to obtain the same resource.
EG: Organisms may compete for food or shelter.
Predation
When one organism kills and eats another, the attacker is called a predator and the one being eaten is called the prey.
Mutualism
A relationship where two organisms live closely together and both benefit.
Parasitism
A relationship where one organism lives on or in another organism (the host) and feeds off it.
EG: Headlice
Commensalism
A relationship where one organism benefits and the other is unaffected.
Changes in Abiotic Factors
Each species has a tolerance range for each abiotic factor.
The optimum range is the range within the tolerance range in which it functions best.
E.g. Most species can survive within a narrow temperature range - Penguins can tolerate sub - zero temperatures but would die at 40 degrees.
