Relationships And Families Flashcards
What is the foundational biblical understanding?
Men and women are equal in the name of God. ‘God he created them; male and female […] God blessed them.’
men and women complement each other
What is the Catholic teaching about the nature and purpose of sexual love?
sexual intercource should be within marriage, should be procreative and unitive
What is the significance of sexual intercourse within marriage?
- enables people to commit themselves publically exclusively to eachother
- commitment to be together for a life
- after the promises, the commitment is consumamated by the union of sex. For a valid marriage there has to be sexual intercourse.
What does it mean for sex to be unitive?
- sexual love expresses and deppens the couples love for each other
- ‘the two shall become one flesh’
- sexual intercourse in the name of adultery is forbidden because it destroys the unity of the married couple
Why does sex need to be procreative?
- through sex, God creates new life
- the Catholic marriage ceremnoy contains the commitment to accept children lovingly from God
- ‘Each and every marriage act must remain open to the transmission of life’
What is John Paul II’s teaching about sex and the human body?
Marital sex (sex within marriage):
- unites a couple
- shows commitment, mutual love and respect, leads to greater intemacy
- gives the possiblity of new life
Extramarital sex:
- It can cause exploitation for personal pleasure
- It can make people selfish
- It is a sin and distorts God’s original plan for human beings
What are the contrasting views on relationships and contraception?
For:
- many people in britain have casual sex with many partners
- it could be a responsible way of preventing sexually transmitted diseases
- unplanned pregnancy can give the child a poorer quality of life
Against:
- sex should be treated with respect and consideration
- Catholic teaching says sex should be open to the creation of new life
- you could use the natural fertility cycle on a female to prevent pregnancy naturally
What is the Catholic church’s view on sex before marriage?
- It could devalue it
- there is no danger of STIs before marriage
- the gift of virginity offered in marriage makes the couple feel special, privilaged and loved
‘the Church teaches young people to wait until they are married before they start of have sexual relations’
What are the Catholic views on adultery?
It breaks the vows made in marriage. ‘To have and to hold from this day forward, for better, for worse’
It betrays the trust in marriage and causes harm and suffering to the innocent partner
It brings distress and tensions into the home and causes the whole family to be unahppy
can cause the break up of a marriage
What are the contrasting/non religious views on adultery?
It could break a marriage promise but there may be a reason why; such as if a partner refuses to have sex. Some might have not made a ‘life-long’ promise
Personal happiness is important, even if it may cause emotional harm to someone else
Unhappy marriage
The couple could have made a serious mistake and have found a more suitable partner
What is the Catholic view on homosexuality?
- sex should be open to the possiblity of creating new life
- homosexuals should live celibate lives
- homosexual relations are not allowed because there is no possibility of new life
- people are loved by God regardless of thier sexual orientation, so they should be treated with respect
What are the contrasting views on homosexuality?
- church of england supports the idea of same sex civil partnerships
- same sex marriage was legalised in 2014 in England and Wales; reflecting the views of many in England and Wales
- some reformed churches perform same-sex marriage
What are the conditions of a valid marriage?
- the marriage is consummated
- the couple promise they will remain together
- they must be free to marry
- must be willing to accept gods gift of children
- must be out of free will (pressure could cause the marriage being null and void)
- cannot be closely related
- both must consent
- the promises must be made under a catholic priest
‘human act’ that both partners ‘give themselves to each other’
What is the extension of marriage laws to same-sex couples contrasting views?
Catholic view:
- marriage can only be between a man and a woman
- same-sex couples cannot have children naturally and lovingly from God - cannot be a valid marriage
Contrasting view:
- In 2014, British governemnt legalised same sex marriage
- many people in britain believe that homosexuals should have the same marriage rights as heterosexuals
- they do not see being able to have children is an essential part of marriage
What is pope francis view on homosexuality?
In an interview in 2013, while homosexual acts are sinful, homosexuality itself is not. Homosexuals should be integrated into society, not marginalised.
What is the nature of marriage?
seen as:
- providing a loving relatioship though an atmosphere through which children can grow anf flourish
- an exclusive union between a man and a woman
- a sacrament though which God’s love and blessing is given to a couple
- a sign of the love of Christ for the church
What are the marriage promises?
- full names are used in order to ensure everyone knows the identity of the couple
- same promises ensure the couple is equal
- the promises recognise that there may be difficulties as well as good times in the marriage
- they promise to fulfil a lvoing relationship
- commitment only ends when one partner dies
‘to be my lawfully wedded husband/wife’, ‘for better for worse’ ‘for richer or poorer’ ‘in sickness and in health’ ‘to love and to cherish’ ‘till death do us part’
What is cohabitiation?
When a couple lives together and has a sexual relationship without being married to one another
Why might the Catholic church disagree with cohabilitation?
- it may destroy the sense of family
- it breaks the sancitiy of a sexual union and marriage
- if the couple splits up, it affects the children
- it may crate insecurity as one might leave
- it may destroy a sense of need for faithfulness
- it removes commitment from the sexual union
- it may reduce the effort to make the relationship last
