What is reconciliation?
Restoring harmony after the breaking down of relationships.
Pope francis has called for reconciliation and respect between religions

What does reconciliation bring?
Appreciation of eachother, a more peaceful future, a stronger relationship, an opportunity to live without fear, respect for others’ religions, opportunities to learn from the past.
What is the importance of justice?
The catholic church teaches that god’s desire is for everyone to be treated equally. Injustice can lead to someone lose thier sense of self-worth and respect.

What is righteous anger?
righteous anger is the anger to evil, like oppressive governents (in south africa).
Jesus belived in ‘love thy neighbour’, but he showed righteous anger when he kicked out sellers in the temple.
What are the contrasting views to violent protest?
Against violent protest:
- it is ineffective way of creating change
- it can lead to a loss in life
- peaceful protests do work
For violent protest:
- it might be the only way to spread awareness
- some violent protests lead to good (suffregette movement)
- the church took part in protests against the congo
What is the just war theory?
Started and controlled by proper authorities It must have a just reason It must be for the right intention Must be a last resort Benefits must be greater than harm done A reasonable chance of success
What are the contrasting views on just war theory?
Against just war theory:
It is irrelevent to modern society
It is better to avoid war altogether
For just war theory:
We should only support a war that meets the just war theory

What are the catholic attitiudes to nuclear war and WMD?
- They indiscriminate and have long term effects
- they are totally disproportionate to any success that may follow
- with WMDs success is unlikely, ‘victors, only victims’ pope benedict XVI
- the cost of WMDs are high, waste of taxpayers money
- possession of these weapons creates fear and tension
What are the contrasting views on nuclear war?
For:
- deters aggressive attacks from weaker countries
- for self defense, not offense
Against:
- they can cause mass destruction
- there are no winners in nuclear war
- it would be the civilians that suffer the most
What are the catholic views on civilian casualties?
They teach its wrong for non-combatants to be attacked. The catechism of catholic church states that ‘non-combatants, wounded soldiers and prisoners must be respected and treated humanely’
What are refugees?
People who have been forced to flee thier homes because of war or a series threat to thier life. They flee with few possesions.
What is the catholic churches view on refugees?
They should be welcomed and protected by all countries. Pope Francis preached ‘every religious community […] host a family’. Many people host a family or donate to charity
What are the contrasting views on modern warfare?
Some people believe that WMD can end wars quicker, even if they cause more civilian castualites. Some people believe britain does not have enough resources to support refugees or other. Some believe asylum seekers can boost the economy so they should be allowed to say there.
