Relationships Flashcards
What is Human Reproductive Behaviour?
This refers to the different behaviours that humans exhibit in order to increase their reproductive success. Examples include competing with other members of the same sex to access the best possible mate (intra-sexual competition), and selecting the best possible mate from the opposite sex (inter-sexual competition).
What is Sexual Selection?
A type of natural selection and competition for mates along with the development of characteristics that aid reproductive success drive evolution.
What is Intrasexual Selection (mate competition)?
It is one type of sexual selection, where members of the same sex compete with one another for members of the opposite sex. Those who ‘win’ are able to mate and pass on their genes to the next generation.
What is Intersexual Selection (mate choice)?
It involves one sex having preferences for members of the opposite sex who posses certain qualities.
What does the Evolutionary Explanation for Partner Preferences suggest?
-That we form relationships to form a survival and reproductive advantage.
-It argues that we are motivated to ensure the survival of our genes so males and females show a preferences to form relationships with partners that will most likely produce healthy offspring.
-Males and females faced different adaptive challenges and therefore- have evolved to adopt different partner preference and mating behaviour strategies to increase their chances of reproductive success.
-In summary we form relationships in order to reproduce to ensure the survival of our genes. This influence what we look for in a partner and our relationship preference (short or long term).
What is Anisogamy?
-It refers to differences between male and female sex cells (gametes).
How does Anisogamy related to Men?
Male gametes (sperm) are plentiful, as males can produce sperm and remain fertile from puberty to old age. Also male investment can be as little as a few minutes, some males do invest in their offspring, but it is not essential.
